Monrovia, Liberia: President George Manneh Weah has bemoaned reports of serial waves of death amongst public servants, particularly in Monrovia and its environs, and is assuring the public of thorough and transparent investigation.

“This is a sad time for our country, for the families of the dead, and especially for the government of Liberia. No one can accept this,” the President said in an interview. “Let me extend our condolences to the families.”

The President’s comments were in response to what appears to be mysterious death of two employees of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) and the Director of the Internal Auditing Agency (IAA)—deaths that have generated public disquiet in the country.

Mr. Albert Peters and Mrs. Gifty Lama of the Liberia Revenue Authority were found dead in a vehicle last week on Broad Street, followed by Mr. Emmanuel Barten Nyenswah of the Internal Audit Agency who was found dead.

Already, the President has requested the United States Embassy near Monrovia to help Government unravel the causes of death and ordered the Ministry of Justice to work with other partners on the same matter.

Commenting on the rather troubling waves of deaths Sunday, October 11, 2020, the Liberian Chief Executive assured bereaved families of the government’s unwavering determination to thoroughly investigate and establish the causes of the various doleful incidents.

What is more concerning, the Liberian Leader noted, was that these shocking incidents occurred at a time democracy is flourishing in the country and people’s rights are respected.

“This is why we are working with our partners through the US Embassy to help us along with our security and medical experts to find a pathologist to determine what happened,” President Weah said.

He added: “For now, no one knows what happened. What is clear is our determination working with our partners to be able to determine the cause of each death.”

“I wake up every morning determined to work hard for our country. Hearing news of death of someone in the street or car is worrisome. So, I hope the police, the Justice Ministry will act as urgently as possible. I have instructed the Justice Minister to work with our partners to be able to make a determination of what really happened,” President Weah stated further.
