President Weah Issues Proclamation Extending Legislature’s Regular Session by One Week

Monrovia, Liberia: His Excellency President George Manneh Weah has issued a proclamation for the 54th National Legislature to extend its Second Regular Session for a period of one week, beginning October 1, 2019 to October 4, 2019.
 
The proclamation is intended to provide the Legislature opportunity to discuss and act upon matters of urgent national importance.
 
The Chief Executive declares: “Now, Therefore, I, Dr. George Manneh Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia, by virtue of the Authority in me vested, do hereby issue this proclamation for the 54th Legislature to extend its Second Regular Session for a period of one (1) working week, beginning October 1, 2019 to October 4, 2019,” the Proclamation declares.
 
President Weah’s decision is in line with Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic which states that the President shall, on his own initiative or upon receipt of a certificate signed by at least one fourth of the total membership of each House, and by Proclamation, extend the Second Regular Session of the Legislature beyond the date for adjournment or call a special or extraordinary session of that body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergency and concerns. 
 
“Whereas, in accordance with Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, a Certificate of Extension was signed on September 12, 2019, by at least one fourth of the total membership of each House, and by proclamation, to extend the Second Regular Session of the 54th Legislature from September 15, 2019 to September 30, 2019, to discuss or act upon matters of national emergency and concern,” the Proclamation further asserts.
 
Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic also requires that when the extension or call is at the request of the Legislature, the proclamation shall be issued not later than forty-eight hours after receipt of the Certificate by the President.
