Monrovia, Liberia - The First Lady of the Republic, Mrs. Clara Weah has decried the increase in rape incidents and other forms of sexual gender-based violence across the country. She described the situation as worrying and unacceptable and called for urgent concerted actions.

In a meeting with Swedish Ambassador to Liberia Ingrid Wetterqvist who paid her a courtesy call Tuesday, January 29, 2019, Madam Weah said she would engage key stakeholders and institute programs not only to confront such crimes head-on in the country but also to empower women and children work towards their own protection and defense against abuse and violence.

The First Lady called for support from the Swedish envoy and international groups increase collaboration and cooperation to fight against the rape pandemic and other forms of gender-based violence.

During the meeting, Madam Weah and the Swedish Ambassador held discussions on a wide range of issues including the protection and promotion of women and children’s rights in Liberia.

They expressed deep concerns over various forms of violence and abuse against women and children, stressing the need for robust initiatives to address the situation.

The Swedish Ambassador thanked the First Lady for her commitment and great initiatives towards the protection and empowerment of women and girls.

Ambassador Wetterqvist explained that the Swedish government strongly supports the protection of women’s rights and related issues around the world, including Liberia.

She described the First Lady as an influential person with a huge passion for advancing women issues in the country. He also expressed her commitment to working together in various ways possible to fight sexual gender-based violence in the country.
