New York, U.S.A - The President, Dr. George Manneh Weah has on the margins of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York, held bilateral talks with Canadian Prime Minister, H.E. Justin Trudeau.

President Weah used the opportunity to thank Prime Minister Trudeau for Canada’s continued support and partnership with Liberia, and urged stronger ties between Canada and Liberia in areas of investment and development cooperation.

For his part, the Canadian Premier again congratulated President Weah for his historic victory in last year's election. He described Canada and Liberia as strong partners in democracy and development.

 Prime Minister Trudeau said there are many areas for both countries to enhance their relationship for the benefits of the two peoples.

The Liberian leader’s meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau is the first of several bilateral and business discussions he is scheduled to have with world leaders and investors ahead of his inaugural address to the UN General Assembly.

It can be recalled that the Canadian Prime Minister visited Liberia in November 2016 during the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to enable Canada meet several of its top foreign policy objectives: empowering women and girls, promoting human rights, re-engaging with Africa, and addressing the pressing challenges facing the Continent.

Diplomatic relations between Canada and Liberia were established in 1971, and the two countries share many values including democracy, peace and security, the rule of law, and gender equality.

Between 2014 - 2015, Canada provided more than $24 million in development assistance to Liberia, in the areas of health, education, food security, and the environment.
