Monrovia, Liberia - President George Manneh Weah has returned home from the Accra, Ghana where he attended the funeral of deceased former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Ataa Annan.

The funeral, which was attended by world leaders took place on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the Accra International Conference Center about three weeks after Mr. Annan passed on August 18, 2018 in Bern, Switzerland.

President Weah touched down at about 1:47PM at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) and was met on arrival by array of Government officials led by Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Chief of Staff, Mr. Nathaniel Farlo McGill, among others who served as Acting Chair of the Cabinet.

His participation in the funeral of the late ex-UN Secretary General is not only because he is the president of Liberia, but owing to the special relationship they both shared.

It was during the reign of the late Mr. Annan as UN Secretary General, when President Weah served as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador; the Portfolio that afforded him opportunity to advocate for peace and the plight of children the world over, especially Liberian children when Liberia was at war with itself.

It can be recalled that President Weah described Mr. Annan’s passing as ‘loss to the rest of the world, not only to his family and country, Ghana,’ while signing book of condolence on August 23, 2018 at the Ghanaian Embassy in Monrovia.

“He was a great Statesman and an outstanding diplomat of all times. He was my boss,” President Weah declared.

The late Ghanaian international diplomat was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, who served from January 1997 to December 2006, and a proud recipient of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for his role to bring peace to the world.
