President Weah Reaffirms Commitment to Implement NED Recommendations

(Monrovia, Liberia):His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah has once again reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the National Consensus Document, which is an outcome of the just ended National Economic Dialogue (NED) conference.

In a letter dated September 12, 2019 and addressed to Liberia’s 54th National Legislature, Dr. Weah requested the august body to advise and provide guidance on all legislative and other necessary measures necessary for the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, including the establishment of economic and war crime courts in Liberia—a major recommendation from the NED conference.

The National Economic Dialogue held September 4-6, 2019 proffered four cardinal recommendations to address Liberia’s challenges on immediate and medium terms basis.

They included strategies to revive and grow the economy such as addressing public finance mobilization and management, investment and private sector growth, unemployment and skills development and the peacebuilding and reconciliation.

The NED conference, which was attended by 350 participants that included government officials and representatives from political parties, youth, women, development partners, civil society organizations, and institutions of higher learning, called for the implementation of recommendations of the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission calling for establishing economic and war crime courts.

In his communication to the National Legislature, Dr. Weah reminded members of the 54th National Legislature that accountability for past human rights violations are essential ingredients for sustainable peace and the achievement of inclusive development.
