Monrovia, Liberia - President George Manneh Weah has received in audience the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Expression and Opinion, Mr. David Kaye. He was accompanied to the Office of the President by Acting Foreign Minister, Elias Shoniyin, Dr. Azin Tadjini, a Human Right Officer in the Office of the Special Rapporteur and Rev. Bartholomew Colley of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR).

The Liberian leader met the UN Special Rapporteur on Friday, March 9, 2018 at his Foreign Ministry Office in Monrovia.

President Weah said he was pleased to meet the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Expression and Opinion at a time when he had just inherited the mantle of authority to lead a ‘pro-poor government’ that is dedicated to improving the lives of all Liberians irrespective of their background or orientation.

He expressed his administration’s determination to at all time respect and protect the fundamental right to freedom of expression and opinion of Liberians including those critical of his government.

Earlier, Mr. David Kaye commended President Weah for his hindsight in putting human rights at the top f his administration’s agenda, which was ardently articulated in his inaugural speech delivered on January 22, 2018at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville outside Monrovia. He called on the government to prioritize the promotion and protection of freedom expression and opinion, which he termed as critical towards the consolidation of Liberia’s democratic gains.
