President Weah Inspects Warehouses Amid Rumors of Imminent Rice Shortage
Monrovia, Liberia: His Excellency President George Manneh Weah Tuesday, March 3, 2020 paid a surprise visit at the Freeport of Monrovia to inspect warehouses of some of the leading rice importers in the country.
President Weah’s decision to inspect warehouses came amid growing public anxiety fanned by widespread rumors indicating that the country’s staple food would run out of supply on the local market soon.
Furthermore, the President wanted to avoid the repeat of recent crisis in which the abrupt shortage of gasoline in the country nearly paralyzed the national economy and caused untold suffering for the population.
President Weah made the abrupt trip to the Free Port to see for himself the level of stockpiles of rice available in the country and how long it could last.
Warehouses inspected by the Liberian leader included the South West Africa Trading (SWAT) and United Commodities Incorporated (UCI).
Accompanied by top managers of the two huge rice importers, the President was shown huge tons of rice stacked in warehouses.
The managements of SWAT and UCI dispelled the rumor of pending shortage of rice.
They assured the Liberian president that the huge stockpiles of rice in their respective warehouses would last for the next seven months.
They also informed President Weah about the arrival of several tons of rice in the country in the next few weeks.
