President Weah Consoles Nigerians Over Death of Former President Shagari

Monrovia, Liberia: President George Manneh Weah at the head of an array of government officials at the Nigeria Embassy near Monrovia on Friday, January 4, 2019 signed a Book of Condolence for the fallen former Nigeria’s Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari. Shagari reportedly died at the National Hospital in Abuja on Friday. 
 
President Weah said he was saddened by the passing of Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari and, on behalf of the government and people of Liberia, expressed condolences to the government and people of Nigeria as they go through a period of mourning. 
 
At the Nigerian House near Monrovia, the Liberian leader met with the Ambassador of Nigeria, Amb James Dimka and staff of the embassy and reiterated Liberian government’s deepest regrets over the demise of their former president. He encouraged the Nigerians to be strong as they go through their time of sorrow.
 
President Weah also used the occasion to pay tribute to the continued thriving bilateral relationship subsisting between Liberia and Nigeria, a relationship he said continues to produce win-win benefits not only for the peoples of the two countries but also for the West African sub-region. 
 
Responding, the Ambassador of Nigeria, Amb. Amb James Dimka thanked President Weah and entourage for identifying with the government and people of Nigeria during their time of bereavement. He expressed the hope that Liberia-Nigeria relations will continue to prosper in the years ahead.
