Monrovia, Liberia:  Upbeat by the positive signs of openness and willingness coming from the Trump administration, President George Manneh Weah has expressed joy and appreciation for the continuous support of the United State of America towards Liberia’s governance and development undertakings.

 

In addition to other critical supports to Liberia’s development in the past, the US administration has stepped up its intervention, this time specifically targeting the Weah-led government’s Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development.

 

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, President Weah on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia and US Ambassador Christine Elder signed a Statement of Collaboration affirming both countries’ commitment to working together to  institute policy reforms necessary for  broad-based private sector-led, more effective and accountable governance and improved health and education for Liberia.

 

The two governments also signed US$112 million dollars grant agreement through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the 2018 fiscal year. 

 

President Weah and his government see reforms as critical to successfully moving Liberia on its journey to self-reliance. 

 

In remarks, US Ambassador Christine Elder said “the Trump administration is willing and committed to supporting the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development.”

 

“In particular, USAID intends to use its assistance to Liberia to prioritize inclusive economic development as the fundamental driver of change in Liberia,” she said further. “USAID also intends to pursue intervention in the areas of health, education, agriculture, democracy and governance.”
