President Weah Issues Proclamation Extending 6th Regular Session of the Legislature

Monrovia, Liberia - The President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah has issued a Proclamation extending the Sixth Regular Session of the 54th National Legislature by two weeks beginning from August 22, 2023, to September 5, 2023.

The Proclamation is consistent
with a Certificate of Extended signed by at least one-fourth of the
total membership of each House forwarded to President on August
1, 2O23 for the extension of the Sixth Regular Session of the 54th Legislature
for a period of two weeks, beginning August 22, 2023 and ending
September 5, 2023.

The Certificate of Extension is to allow the Legislature the opportunity to discuss and
act upon several legislations of time-sensitive nature and others centered on
national development, integrity, transparency, and accountability

It can be recalled that  the Sixth Regular Session of the 54th Legislature adjourned on Friday, the 21st day of July, 2023 in accordance with the
Act earlier proclaimed but a Certificate of Extension was submitted to the
President by the Legislature to extend its Sixth
Regular Session from July 2, 2023 and ending July 28, 2023.

The Presidential Proclamation states: "There are still pending issues of national concerns requiring the
intervention of the 54th Legislature
of the Republic of Liberia for which the 54th
Legislature of the Republic of Liberia has submitted to the President a Certificate
to reconvene its Sixth Regular Session from August 22, 2023, and ending
September 5, 2O23."

Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia states
that the President shall, on his own initiative or upon receipt of a certificate
signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each House, and by
proclamation, extend a regular session of the Legislature beyond the date for
adjournment, or call a special or extraordinary session of that body to discuss or
act upon matters of national emergency and concern.

The same Article 32 (b) further
requires that when the extension or call is at the request of the Legislature, the
proclamation shall be issued not later than forty-eight hours after receipt of the
Certificate by the President.
